Initiative overview
The Kenya Initiative is an effort to build a self-sustaining pediatric neurosurgery program in Kenya. Leland Albright, MD and his wife Susan Ferson, RN, PNP began working toward this goal in 2010 when they retired and moved to Kijabe, Kenya. Together they have been practicing and teaching pediatric neurosurgery at the AIC Kijabe Hospital. In 2011, neurosurgeon Humphrey Okechi completed a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery with Dr. Albright and is now a full-time pediatric neurosurgeon on the Kijabe faculty. Two outstanding Kenyan physicians, Dan and Naomi Ochieng, are in a neurosurgery residency in Cape Town, South Africa. After completing their training in South Africa, they have committed to return to Kijabe to continue the pediatric neurosurgery program after Leland and Susan leave. Learn more
